Evening Encounters with Ilse Ghekiere and Anissa Boujdaini | Feb 26
Evening Encounters is a series of rendezvous with visible and invisible agents from the fields of Dance, Performance and Choreography. For the third edition of Evening Encounters, ISAC welcomes Ilse Ghekiere and Anissa Boujdaini to introduce and discuss the work of the organization Engagement and their current research project Subjective Mapping of Sexism and Racism in Art Education.
ENGAGEMENT is an intersectional artist-led movement tackling sexual harassment, sexism and power abuse in the Belgian arts field. The project was shaped by a group of Brussels-based dancers and developed in the context of D.I.T. (Do It Together), a research and development trajectory by Kunstenpunt. This Evening Encounter might be an opportunity for the students to reflect on the recent ISAC's Art School Discrimination And Harassment Policy, an agreement addressed to all the participants of the program. Ilse Ghekiere dances, researches and writes. She studied dance at the Conservatory of Antwerp and has a MA in art history from The Free University of Brussels. As a dancer she has worked with, among others, Michèle Anne De Mey, Mette Ingvartsen, Jan Martens, Pavle Heidler and Stina Nyberg. In 2016 she reoriented her practice to focus on the relationship between literature, body politics and gender history. As the initiator of ENGAGEMENT, she is interested in the position of the artist as activist. She has written several articles on the topic of sexism and abuse of power in dance. She lives and works in Oslo and Brussels.
With both personal and social critical poems, Anissa Boujdaini (1989) pulls her audience softly but merciless in her stream of thought. Aside from performing, Anissa also conducts poetry lectures and organises workshops performance and text. In 2015, the Flemish Funds of Literature accepted her on the organisations authors list. Anissa is currently a permanent correspondent for Rekto:Verso, a coach for many slam projects and a sought-after stage poet. At the moment, she is one of the curators of the ‘Decolonize is a verb’ project at Muntpunt.
